I’m trying. I really am… with this winter running thing.
I wanted to attend vinyasa yoga class Monday night. So I made myself a deal. I could go, so long as I didn’t skip my run and so long as I ran outside. But that 47-degree day sure was deceiving. By the time I got out the sun soon faded and the wind picked up even more. I started out at what felt like a decent clip.

I ran for about 40 minutes. I probably covered around 3.5 miles. I ran sans-Garmin so I wouldn’t be focused on mileage or beeps telling me how far I’d gone. I opted to run in and out of several residential side streets, with hopes the homes would block the wind. I had no such luck!
The Bondi Band covering my ears wasn’t enough and my hands soon began to freeze up too. I think the sun setting really made the difference. I’m glad I got out there though, considering my distaste for this winter running. Of course the yoga reward didn’t hurt either.

The forecast is looking a little better!

Ha! Yes… I hear you. I don’t run under 40 degrees. I did get out yesterday and it felt awesome!! NE Ohio is stinky for runners–well, a “light runner” such as myself!
(And yes…the wind was killer!)
Dang – that is some seriously sucky running weather. When does it typically warm up in Cleveland?
Haha! According to the locals here this has been a mild winter because we haven’t received much snow. But to answer your question I would say around April we’ll start having consistent days of 60-degrees for the high. By May prolly 65-degrees.
Good for you for getting out there and running! I was very disappointed when I got home at 7:45 and it was SO much colder than it was earlier in the day. Just gotta tough it out I guess
Thanks Kate!
I know it sounds crazy but I actually loving running in 30-degree weather. Unfortunately, I don’t get to do it often! I do have to bundle up — gloves and a hat are necessary — but there’s something about running in the bitter cold that’s fun. Well, once I get moving. Of course, anything UNDER that?? I’m a wuss.
Haha. I think you need to move up north then.
Way to take the plunge. Getting outside early in your training will provide huge dividends on race day! Keep up the great work.
I’m going to sound like an old lady, but have you tried mittens? I can’t stand it when my hands are cold!
I have tried running with gloves on. This time I didn’t because it seemed much warmer when the sun was out. Other times I have worn them and then my hands start sweating! Can’t seem to win.
Yesterday was my first semi-winter run (I’ve been taking cover at the heated gym lately instead) with gloves, a hat, an underarmor shirt and shorts.
Although I felt a bit cold around my chest and back at the beginning, this eventually passed after a mile.
Hands are another story though…they just tend to stay cold with or without gloves.
Maybe it’ll get easier with time.
Thanks for the post!
Yuk Holly, that’s rough weather!
