I did something Tuesday I haven’t done in about 5 years.
I took a kickboxing class!
The last time I did this was in college. There were a lot of group exercise classes offered at the student recreation center and kickboxing was one my friends and I were known to try. It was so hard back then — and still is.
I was amazed how weak my hips felt during many of the kicks, but my aerobic stamina seemed well off — probably from that thing called running.
In all the class was a nice change of pace. I’m not sure I’ll be kickboxing every week, but it’s great to have another cross-training option, especially during the winter. And it does make me feel hardcore.
Monday night was also a first. I attended a slow flow yoga class at Nishkama Yoga in Independence. There are a number of FREE classes being offered this month there. (Check out Alicia’s post for details.) These classes are being taught by recent yoga teacher training graduates. The class I took included a variety of arm exercises using a strap. My shoulders and upper back definitely felt it the day after.
In other yoga news I did recently purchase a 30-day unlimited pass for Pink Lotus Yoga in Lakewood. It’s a new student special they are offering (still available). It’s only $30 for the pass! I can’t wait to try out some classes there — probably even this week.
Admittedly, my workouts have been straying from my projected training schedule. But at least I’m keeping active more days than not. I have a feeling the real training won’t start until about February anyway.
I might as well enjoy a little extra spare time while I can!

Definitely enjoy the spare time! When I was training for my first half, I felt like all I did was run, run, run – because when you’re running that many miles, there’s not much time for anything else. I was actually excited to get it over with so I could get back to the gym, classes and yoga. Now that I’m training for my second, I know my body’s fitness level will get me through the miles so I’m doing a little less running and a lot more cross-training
I’m a happier camper in general.
Great insight Andi. Thanks for commenting!
